Lesson of the Day for my Choreography

"The cliche - there is nothing new under the sun - has been said so many times that nobody remembers who originally made the observation. When we try to create something new we have to acknowledge that we are simply reworking what we have been told and taught into the context of our experiences. The deeper you can investigate your experiences, the more you will have to offer as you create your own work. In terms of the elements of dance, the more you allow yourself to explore what you know about the time and space, and effort of your experience, the more you will have to offer as a choreographer."

Preview of The Summer Stage

The Harlem Dance Caravan- Erasing the Boundaries

Styles of dance to be performed by Lotus Music & Dance artists include: Polynesian, Native American, Okinawan (Japanese), and more!

Audiences will be enthralled by companies such as Baoku & the Image Afro-Beat Band, who presents African drumming and dancing that fuses jazz and rock with traditional elements; Jamel Gaines' Creative Outlet, famed for its merging of classical and modern techniques and shows that incorporate theatrics like spoken word and video; Lotus Music and Dance, the only company and educational institute in NYC that makes accessible the music and dance traditions of all world cultures; and the multicultural Cecilia Marta Dance Company, who aims to build bridges between communities through dance.

Grants Workshop

I attended 
the Grants Workshop (Arts & Culture Resources) New York Council for the Humanities 
sponsored by U.S. Congresswoman Grace Meng 
held at the Queens Public Library this morning.

Brooklyn Arts Council, Bronx Council on the Arts, Queens Council on the Arts 
were presenting their programs.

Rehearsal at the Faison Firehouse Theater

Our first rehearsal took place at the studio of the Faison Firehouse Theater today. 
I met some modern dancers who will be dancing with us 
at the Summer Stage on Aug. 15 and 16th. 
Today, I was the only traditional dancer in the studio.

Lotus is Moving!!! We have a new office located at 262 West 38th Street Suite 1006. We look forward to an exciting new season of classes and workshops at Simple Studios 134 West 29th Street in the Manhattan NYC and a new space Ruth Williams Dance Studio 170 East 116th Street in Harlem NYC. We welcome you all to join us this summer for a few events coming up and to stay in touch with us through the fall about classes, workshops, special events and news concerning our upcoming 25th Anniversary Celebration. Beginning Flamenco - For Adults & Teens
Tuesdays 6pm - 7pm
September 9th - October 28th
Full Session-8 classes-$160
Single Session-$25
This workshop is to introduce the basic technique for arm work (Braceo) and footwork (Zapateado) of the Flamenco dance. The workshop will include also Flamenco rhythms (Compas) in fun excersies for flamenco clapping (palmas flamencas) basic footwork. The class starts with a warm up for good posture, upper body and arm work. Class will culminate with little shoreography and combination steps to be taken to a more advance level.

There are two Mainera Workshops: One for beginner students and the other for Intermediate /Advanced students ages 6yrs and up (kids-teens-adults). Rosa will introduce the Mainera dance and styles. In the beginning, dance students work on the steps, coordinating footwork and develop warm up routines in the Mainera techniques
